Bildungsroman, Failure, and Melancholy in the Rock Novels Antipop by Patricio Jara and La Armada Invencible by Antonio Ortuño

The article reads the novels Antipop (2016), by Chilean writer Patricio Jara, and La Armada Invencible (2022), by Mexican writer Antonio Ortuño, both of which center on their protagonists’ attempts to pursue their youthful musical ambitions amid economic and existential precarity. Situating the analysis within the history of the relationship between rock and Latin American youth cultures, this article argues that these novels can be read as examples of the Bildungsroman shaped by the narration of crisis, failure, and frustrated development.
