In certain 18th century Spanish essays, a tension exists between the enlightenment’s scientific spirit and imperial censorship. This article justifies the reconsideration of genre by showing how the Relación (1788) and its translation (1820) approach this conflict, in which Antonio de Córdoba’s first journey through the Straits of Magellan is detailed.
