Michel Villey and the Problem of Voluntarism in Duns Scotus
Keywords:
Michel Villey, John Duns Scotus, Voluntarism, Philosophy of Law, InterpretationAbstract
In this paper we examine Michel Villey’s interpretation of the notions of will and voluntarism according to the blessed John Duns Scotus. First of all, we present the state of Scotistic studies until the first half of the 20th century, to provide a context for the interpretation of the French professor. Then, we follow Villey’s account of Scotus’ doctrine in his lessons, and we contrast this account with what the Subtle Doctor states about the foundation of the free acts of the will in his Lectura. We conclude with a critical assessment of Villey as an interpreter of Scotus.
