On the concept of authority

This paper aims to examine the phenomenon of authority in view of the power it implies. The fi rst section of the paper discusses the structural and generative aspects of the kind of power and power relationship which are characteristic of authority, pointing to an advantage of power acting as “auratic part” which this relationship would consist of. The second section analyses this advantage from a pronouncement by Montaigne on the “mystical foundation” of the authority of laws, and from Jacques Derrida’s comment on it.
