In the early 80’, geographer Hilario Hernández Gurruchaga established the groundwork for regional studies regarding the Gran Concepción (Chile). Hernández focused on historical development in what appeared to be an urban conurbation, but was in fact an agglomeration due to its functional specialization, social differentiation and pendular movements. This study reveals the value of Hernández Gurruchaga´s work for new researches, especially considering the actual fast changes which are taking place in the area of Gran Concepción.
