Dark-skinned mistress: the “whitening” of mulatta Blasa Díaz, slave in Lima and slave-owner in Santiago, 1700-1750

The aim of this paper is to show the complexity and heterogeneity among the black and mulatto population, free or slave, in 18th century Santiago, through the daily life of Blasa Díaz, a free brown-skinned woman. Her social bleaching process gives us clues about her life, the internal dynamics of urban slavery and also about the society in which she lived.
