The Christian sin of lust in the Nahuátl culture (16th century)
Keywords:
Náhuatl culture, evangelisation, Andrés Olmos, sin, lustAbstract
A sermon by Franciscan friar Andrés Olmos about the sin of lust is analysed in the context of the Christian evangelisation of New Spain (16th century). The hypothesis in this paper focuses on the fact that the native people who were being evangelised showed little or no receptivity towards the aforementioned discourse. The starting point for this hypothesis are the similarities and differences between the Christian and Náhuatl interpretations of the symbols used by Olmos.
