Abstract

The obligation of promises as a moral action is in the origin of a contraposition between the tradition of natural right and utilitarianism. As a natural right, the obligation of promises is defended explicitly by Thomas Reid, philosopher of common sense, and as a utilitarian action it is defended by David Hume. This disagreement finds its roots in their different concepts of justice.
